Insurance and Payment Options
Understanding costs and coverage ahead of time helps you make informed decisions about care.

I am an out-of-network provider, which means I don’t bill insurance companies directly. However, many clients successfully use their out-of-network benefits for reimbursement.
If your plan includes out-of-network coverage, I can submit claims electronically on your behalf or provide a superbill if you prefer to submit them yourself.
Working outside insurance allows us to focus on your goals and maintain greater privacy in therapy.
-
If your insurance plan includes out-of-network benefits, you pay the session fee at the time of your appointment. Your insurance company may then reimburse you for a portion of the cost.
I can submit claims electronically on your behalf, or provide a superbill you can submit directly to your insurance company.
Coverage varies by plan, so it’s helpful to check with your insurance provider about your out-of-network deductible and reimbursement rate.
-
If you choose to self-pay, the full session fee is due at each appointment.
If you plan to use out-of-network insurance benefits, you will still pay the session fee upfront. Your insurance company may reimburse a portion of the cost depending on your plan.
Before beginning therapy, you’ll receive a Good Faith Estimate outlining the expected cost of services.
-
Payment is due at the time of your appointment. Most clients pay by credit card, HSA/FSA card, or other electronic payment methods.
Paying out-of-pocket allows therapy to remain private and avoids the need for a mental health diagnosis required by many insurance companies.
-
I would be happy to check on this for you. When you schedule a consultation, you can include your insurance information, and I will send you an estimate.
Want to check your own benefits?
Here's what to ask:1) Do I have out-of-network benefits for individual therapy/family therapy?
2) If yes, what is my out-of-network deductible?
3) Is this deductible combined with my in-network deductible or is it separate?
4) How much of this deductible has been satisfied so far?
5) What is my co-insurance once my deductible has been satisfied? (This is usually a percentage)
6) What is my out-of-pocket maximum? How much as been met this year?
7) Do I have any kind of special mental health network or require any special authorizations?
8) What is the process for reimbursement and how long do I have to submit claims?

Yes — however I have formally opted out of Medicare. This means sessions with me are private pay and cannot be billed to Medicare.
Before beginning therapy, Medicare requires that we sign a Medicare Private Contract acknowledging that services will not be submitted to Medicare.
-
Yes. However, plans such as MinnesotaCare, MA, or TRICARE generally do not include out-of-network benefits. If you choose to work with me, sessions would be private pay.
-
Yes. Therapy is considered a qualified medical expense, so most HSA, FSA, and HRA accounts can be used for payment.
You may use your HSA/FSA card directly or submit receipts for reimbursement through your account administrator.

I do not offer a sliding scale. However, Open Path Collective is a helpful resource for finding therapists who provide reduced-fee services.
Therapy FAQs
Common questions about the therapy process, scheduling, and what to expect when working together.
-
Yes. Change can begin with just one person.
Individual sessions focused on your relationship can help you understand patterns, strengthen your skills, and create shifts that often influence the relationship as a whole.
-
Traditional therapy focuses on talking through experiences, patterns, and emotions to create insight and lasting change.
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a structured approach that uses guided eye movements and visualization to help process difficult memories and emotional experiences more quickly.
Some clients use one approach, while others combine both depending on their goals.
-
The best therapy relationship is built on compatibility. My approach tends to work well for people who are looking for:
• Relationship-focused work — your relationship is treated as the client, even when one partner attends alone
• Clear, practical sessions — you leave with tools you can use right away
• A style that is direct, warm, and collaborative
• Flexible options including in-person sessions in Brainerd or secure telehealth in MN and SCThe introductory consultation helps us both decide whether working together makes sense.
-
Most clients begin with weekly sessions, especially when challenges feel more immediate.
As things improve, sessions may shift to every other week or less often depending on what supports your progress.
Scheduling is flexible, and we’ll find a rhythm that works for you.
-
It depends on your goals and the challenges you're facing. Some clients notice meaningful shifts after just a few sessions, while others prefer longer-term work for deeper change.
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) can sometimes resolve specific issues in just a few sessions, making it faster than many traditional approaches.
In our early sessions we’ll talk about your goals and create a plan that fits your needs.
-
Sometimes, especially if you plan to use insurance. Insurance companies typically require a mental health diagnosis in order to reimburse therapy services.
If you choose to pay privately, a diagnosis may not be necessary.
We can talk through the implications so you can make an informed decision about what feels right for you.
-
Every person and relationship is different, so there isn’t a single number that defines success in therapy.
What many clients experience is clearer communication, less conflict, greater emotional calm, and more confidence navigating difficult situations.
Therapy works best when we collaborate — I bring experience and proven tools, and you bring your willingness to engage in the process.
